INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY CONSULTING

Senior R&D Leadership and Market Intelligence for Industrial Biotech

Apex Bio Consulting brings independent, senior judgment to internal decisions - which technology to back, which direction to kill, what to build first, whether a platform is ready to commercialize - drawn from 25 years across strain development, fermentation, and R&D leadership.  Delivered as a focused assessment, a standing advisory relationship, or fractional R&D leadership.

WHAT I DO

Three Ways to Work Together

Start wherever fits. Engagements run from a standing advisory relationship, to a focused project, to ongoing fractional leadership — all drawing on the same senior, independent counsel built across 25 years of strain development, fermentation, and R&D management.

ADVISORY RELATIONSHIP
Founder Mentoring

This track is for founders with deep technical skill who want experienced help in thinking through the interaction between the science and the business. The focus is on identifying the commercial need: what the market actually requires the technology to do and the performance a process has to reach to be competitive. From there the work runs backward, to the experiments to get you there and selection of routes to run in parallel. A small amount of senior outside input at those decision points can save a lot of resources.

Standing monthly slots, typically 2–4 hours at $200/hour ·Start here, scale up anytime

Weighing market, IP, and regulatory factors against the development path

Prioritizing development against the funding runway

Mapping current lab KPIs against the targets competitive economics will require

Bringing structure to how experiments are planned, tracked, and concluded

PROJECT WORK
Custom Reports & Strategic Consulting

Focused work built around a single decision, scoped as a defined deliverable on a defined timeline and pre-determined number of hours. It runs from companies setting technical or competitive strategy, to institutions and programs deciding where to direct funding, to boards and technology-transfer offices assessing a technology. Each report is built from primary research: the literature, patent filings, company disclosures, and direct contact with people active in the field. For an assessment of internal technology, the value is a senior, independent read from outside the organization.

Typical engagement 15–50 hours at $200/hour · Fixed-price available for defined scope

Competitive benchmarking of services or technology against others in the field

Mapping a technology or market area: the active players and the white space

The cost-benefit case for one process or design route versus another: strain selection and process choices

Where an institution or program should direct its technology development effort and funding

CRO/CDMO partner selection

Independent assessment of commercial readiness, for a board or technology-transfer office

ONGOING ADVISORY
Fractional CSO & Senior R&D Advisory

For a company that needs senior R&D leadership on a continuing basis, without the cost or commitment of a full-time chief scientific officer. This usually fits a team that has raised money and is building out its science but would benefit from more experienced technical leadership than it currently has in-house.

Unlike a project with a fixed deliverable, this is an ongoing role: sustained responsibility for the direction and running of the R&D program, carried part-time. What separates it from occasional advice is continuity and accountability, staying current with the program as it develops, being in the decisions rather than reacting to them after the fact, and owning the technical direction over time rather than commenting on it. The engagement runs at a regular cadence, with the scope agreed up front so it stays focused.

R&D strategy and project prioritization against the company's goals

Technical direction across strain, fermentation, and downstream development, designed to fit manufacturing

Team building: structure, hiring, and capability development

CRO and CDMO strategy and oversight

Board and investor communication on R&D progress and risk

Priced as a monthly retainer with a defined scope
