June 2026 Edition
This directory began as a working tool. As an industrial biotechnology consultant, I wanted to keep track of companies active in the field, where they were located, what they did, how many people they have.
It's now a curated, consistently classified population of the companies that constitute this sector: 571 active organizations, each resolved to a single standardized record, sourced and verified entry by entry, and current as of a stated date (May 2026). $495 for the current edition. Every future edition will be $195 for existing purchasers.
Scope and Composition
The current directory profiles 571 active industrial biotechnology companies across North America, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. Inclusion reflects a deliberate editorial scope: active biomanufacturers and the broader ecosystem around them; strain engineering, fermentation, bioprocessing, enzymology, and the equipment and contract-service providers that support them. Buyers of fermentation products, distributors, holding companies, are excluded by design, because their presence would dilute the precision that makes the population useful.
Data Architecture
Each company is resolved to a single standardized record, organized into clear functional layers:
- Identity and location. Company name, official website, and a normalized geography; city, country, and a consolidated North America / EMEA / APAC region tag that supports clean territorial filtering rather than free-text country matching.
- Profile and maturity. Development stage (startup, scaleup, or established), founding year, and funding status from pre-seed through later stages or public ownership. A LinkedIn reference is retained for your own verification.
- Scale. A headcount estimate accompanied by a bucketed size band designed for rapid sorting of the population into size cohorts. The methodology tab documents how these figures are derived and discloses where they are known to undercount (for non-Western firms in particular) rather than presenting them as more precise than they are.
- Classification and capability. The analytical core. Each company carries controlled-vocabulary keywords drawn from an approximately eighty-term taxonomy spanning host organisms, processes, enabling technologies, and end markets; a higher-level business-category grouping; and a technology-platform field describing the specific technical approach. Two narrative fields (a neutral business description and a biotech-involvement assessment) distinguish what the company as a whole is from what it actually does within industrial biotechnology and how central that activity is to its operations.
- Funding and provenance. Where a company's most recent round has been publicly disclosed, the record captures round size, year, and named participants; coverage here is necessarily partial, as much of the population is undisclosed or pre-disclosure, and the field should be read as a disclosed-deal layer rather than comprehensive financial coverage. Every entry carries a source citation, and a dedicated methodology tab documents compilation practice.
The Investor-Intelligence Layer
Beyond the company population, the workbook includes two analytical tables that invert the data to a capital-flow view. The first maps each market segment to the breadth of distinct firms active in it and isolates those demonstrating repeat conviction rather than single-deal participation. The second presents a firm-by-segment matrix showing where individual investors are concentrating. Together they offer a view of the sector's genuine capital base as distinct from its transaction noise; a perspective that is laborious to assemble from raw funding records as classified areas of technology and is provided here ready to use.
Format and Delivery
The directory is delivered as a Microsoft Excel workbook (.xlsx), not a static PDF, because the product is a working dataset. You can sort, filter, and segment the full population on any field, reconcile it against your own account lists, and drop it directly into your existing workflow or LLM for analysis.
The workbook opens in Excel, Google Sheets, and other standard spreadsheet software, and is structured across multiple tabs: the classified company population, the two investor-intelligence tables, and a methodology tab documenting sources and definitions.
Editorial Method and Differentiation
The directory's differentiation is methodological rather than quantitative. Free databases compete on breadth and lose on discipline: thousands of entries, inconsistently tagged, with no mechanism to separate substance from self-description. This directory is curated and classified by a practicing industrial biotechnology consultant. The editorial posture is deliberately conservative - observable, company-level facts as faithfully as I could.
Who It's For
The directory is built for professionals who need the sector as a structured base rather than a narrative:
- Business development and commercial teams at CROs, CDMOs, and service providers assembling qualified, segment-filtered target-account lists.
- Equipment and bioprocess vendors sizing and mapping their addressable market.
- Corporate development and R&D scouting functions maintaining awareness of the competitive and partnership landscape.
- Strategic-intelligence and market-research teams requiring a clean, segmented population as the foundation for further analysis.
A Maintained Instrument
The value of a company population of this kind is sustained through maintenance. This directory is a versioned instrument, current as of its stated snapshot date and refreshed on a regular cadence to incorporate new entrants, retire defunct entities, and update headcount and funding signals as the sector moves. The immediate return is the elimination of weeks of manual reconstruction; the durable return is a maintained, consistently classified base from which repeatable market analysis becomes possible.
