BUSINESS
Develops consolidated bioprocessing technology using engineered thermophilic bacteria to convert cellulosic biomass into low-carbon ethanol and biofuels. Spun out of Enchi Corporation, which itself inherited the thermophilic bacteria IP from Mascoma Corporation. Terragia develops consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) technology using engineered thermophilic anaerobic bacteria to convert cellulosic biomass directly into ethanol without added enzymes or thermochemical pretreatment.
BIOTECH INVOLVEMENT
Core; uses synthetic biology and metabolic engineering for biofuel production from biomass. Terragia uses genetically engineered thermophilic anaerobic bacteria that simultaneously hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose and ferment the resulting sugars to ethanol in a single step (consolidated bioprocessing), eliminating the need for externally added fungal cellulase enzymes.
TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM
