BUSINESS
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, MCLS was established in April 2019 through the consolidation of three Mitsubishi Corporation subsidiaries (MC Food Specialties, Mitsubishi Shoji Foodtech, and KOHJIN Life Sciences) and is a wholly owned subsidiary of trading house Mitsubishi Corporation, distinct from the separately held Mitsubishi Chemical Group. The company manufactures food, health, and cosmetic ingredients, with subsidiaries including KOHJIN Life Sciences (Saiki, Oita), MCLS Europe (Amstelveen), MCLS Asia (Singapore), MCLS China, and operations in Indonesia
BIOTECH INVOLVEMENT
Fermentation is central to the entire business, with proprietary microbial production platforms covering nucleic acids (5'-ribonucleotides, including IMP, GMP marketed as Ribotide), yeast extracts and yeast biomass (primarily torula yeast/Candida utilis), L-glutathione, NMN, the polysaccharide texturant curdlan, lactic acid bacteria including the L-137 strain, and yeast cell wall-derived cosmetic actives (Fervere series). Maltitol and other sugar alcohols are produced through hydrogenation of fermentation- or starch-derived feedstocks. Joint development with German sourdough specialist Böcker on lactic acid bacteria-derived bakery polysaccharides; downstream capabilities include extraction, crystallization, and proprietary drying/powder processing.
