BUSINESS

L'Oréal is the world's largest publicly traded cosmetics and personal care company, with 2024 sales of €43.48 billion and over 90,000 employees operating in 150+ countries with 37 global brands including L'Oréal Paris, Garnier, Maybelline, NYX, Kiehl's, and Lancôme. Through its Novéal subsidiary (founded 1938, biotechnology factory in Tours since 1997, ~250 employees) the group operates in-house biotechnology, green chemistry, and green extraction capabilities to produce active cosmetic ingredients. Sustainability commitments include the L'Oréal for the Future program targeting 95% of ingredients from renewable plant-based sources or abundant minerals by 2030, with biotech partnerships and equity investments deployed through its corporate venture arm BOLD.

BIOTECH INVOLVEMENT

Biotechnology is a meaningful but minority part of the business, oriented around supplying fermentation- and plant-cell-culture-derived active ingredients for in-house cosmetic formulations rather than as a standalone B2B platform. Internal Novéal capabilities cover bacterial fermentation, plant cell culture, and biocatalysis for production of compounds including ProXylane and Mexoryl SX; external engagements include a multi-ingredient development agreement with Debut Biotechnology (cell-free and fermentation, $40M Series B led by BOLD in 2023), participation in the Geno-led beauty ingredients consortium (with Unilever and Kao), and investments in microalgae producer Microphyt and plant-cell platform Algentech. Host organisms span bacteria, yeasts, microalgae, fungi, and plant cell systems.
